Heh, I LOVE the review for David’s album but disagree with his review of Archie’s.
I flove “Your Eyes Don’t Lie”, and I don’t think it’s fair to blame Archie as ‘Idol puppet/cookie-cutter’ just because he is in the Pop genre. I mean, our David even said that he wouldn’t mind being classified POP (as in POPULAR MUSIC – the original definition of POP), as long as he gets to share his music. *coughmakemoneylivelifecoughcough* LOL
But I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed with Archie’s album (yes, I bought it), having heard that his favourite musicians are John Mayer, Jason Mraz and Sara Bareilles, I was hoping that his album was going to be in between John Mayer and Jason Mraz. Not too rock like Mayer, but not too soft like Mraz.
I guess it was kind of hard for him to go with that vibe because one, if he had gone that route he would also be accused as ‘following the trend’ of Mraz and Colbie Caillat. And two, his market is different to Mraz/Mayer/Caillat/Bareilles. Third and last, I doubt Jive is the type of label that produce albums like Mraz’s.
Okay, back to our David.
Perfectly calibrated to reach out to the melodic rock fans who just want to swing and sing along to every angst-ridden line, Cook delivers the goods
Duh, of course he does! His inspirations include 80s music! Come on! It doesn’t get any better than that! Besides, he will make more money off concerts and merchandise than selling albums. Also remember, he already has iPhone and iTouch users buying the Light On Application to use at his concerts!
And concerts are what people want from David Cook – The Record.
His Husky Highness’ gutsy, expressive growl: soaring in Light On, nuanced in Avalance and tear-inducing in Permanent. It’s manly and sensitive – a deadly combo
HAVE I SAID HOW MUCH THIS GUY UNDERSTANDS DAVID??
He does, I tell ya. He does.
He also said that David won the ’second’ Battle of the Davids for staying true to his rock convictions. A lot of people might say, of course he’s going to do a rock record. He’s a rock musician. And Idol is to make a POP STAR, so that’s why he’s being regarded as ‘not cookie-cutter/Idol puppet’. But I have to disagree with this. American Idol (and other Idol shows) has the objective to make a POPular Star, not Pop-music Star so I don’t think our David benefitted from the fact that he’s a rock musician or Archie had the disadvantage because he was a pop musician. As I said above, the Pop genre is originally POPular Music genre, that means ANY KIND of music that is popular is called pop.
Remember Carrie Underwood? Anyway..
Besides the amazing review, David Cook – The Record is featured as Album of the Week by The Straits Times!! Woohoo!
Take that, Beyonce! (JK people! I love Beyonce, but not her new album.)
